Sati Institute 2012 spring courses – registration is now open

We are excited to announce two spring courses:

  • Beginning Pali (Pali I) with Sean Kerr
  • Turning the Wheel of the Dharma: The theory, practice, and history of teaching the Dhamma with Gil Fronsdal and Nona Olivia

These courses will be offered in Spring 2012 for the Sati Institute of Theravada Studies, hosted by the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley.  For registration information, go to http://www.shin-ibs.edu/.

HR-1525: BUDDHIST TEXTS: PALI I with Sean Kerr
An introduction to the language of the Pali Tipikaka. Grammar lessons are based on the language of the early nikayas (sutta collections). By the end of the first semester, students can
expect to have a firm grasp of basic Pali grammar, a working vocabulary of roughly 600 words, and competency in reading standard prose passages of nikaya material with minimal assistance. Course format: Lecture. Evaluation method: Participation/exam. [Auditors with Faculty permission]

HRPH-4558:  TOPICS IN BUDDHIST PRACTICE: TURNING THE WHEEL OF THE DHARMA with Gil Fronsdal and Nona Olivia
The theory, practice, and history of teaching the Dhamma. Beginning with a study of how the Buddha taught, this class will discuss the various ways the Dhamma has been taught. This will include the history, styles, and functions of the “Dhamma talk,” the “Dhamma teacher,” and the teacher-student relationship. [Auditors with Faculty permission]

Sati Institute 2012 Summer online e-course with Bhikkhu Analayo

Readings in the Madhyama-āgama

An e-learning online course by Bhikkhu Anālayo will be offered through the Center for Buddhist Studies, University of Hamburg and co-hosted by the Sati Institute for Theravāda Studies, affiliated with the Institute for Buddhist Studies, Berkeley.

The online registration for the course will be available through the University of Hamburg, beginning on the 1st of March and ending on the 15th of April.  The course starts on May 3, 2012.  You should sign up to audit the course through the University of Hamburg for no credit.  If you wish to receive credit through the Sati Institute and the Institute of Buddhist Studies, you must register this course as independent study – please contact Nona Olivia at SITBSDean@sati.org to arrange this.

Summer semester 2012: The Arahant and the Four Truths in Early Buddhist Discourse
